After having been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2002, Cori Brackett found herself falling into a deep pit of doctor's appointments and medications, while continuing to get worse. Eventually, she found herself in a wheelchair with double vision and slurred speech. Slowly, she learned to maintain the balancing act between pushing herself to get better and having the patience to accept her then-current limitations.

Hungry for knowledge and a clue to her symptoms, she stumbled upon some information linking aspartame to ms-like symptoms.

As she had been a fairly heavy consumer of aspartame and aspartame-containing products (an average of a six-pack/day of diet soda for twenty years), she thought there might be something to this and proceeded to investigate.

[132 mg methanol per day, 924 mg per week, is a known lethal level, if it was a single dose, unless these was also about an ounce of ethyl alcohol (ethanol) daily, which prevents methanol from being made by the ADH1 enzyme into formaldehyde inside cells in specific tissues, in humans only -- this alcohol could also come from normal fermentation by benign bacteria in the colon in many people.]

What resulted from her investigation was the searing and heart-stopping documentary, Sweet Misery: A Poisoned World, its sequel, Sweet Remedy: The World Reacts and her multi-media memoir, Through the Shadows.

Today, she lives a happy, healthy and authentic life and enjoys speaking to groups around the country and sharing guests with you who can help you envision a better world as well as providing the tools you need to discover that better life.

But the EPA ATSDR limit for formaldehyde in drinking water is 1 ppm, or 2 mg daily for a typical daily consumption of 2 L of water:

http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/aspartameNM/message/835
ATSDR: EPA limit 1 ppm formaldehyde in drinking water July 1999: Murray 2002.05.30 rmforall
http://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/tfacts111.html

Fully 11% of aspartame is methanol -- 1,120 mg aspartame in 2 L diet soda, almost six 12-oz cans, gives 123 mg methanol (wood alcohol). If 30% of the methanol is turned into formaldehyde, the amount of formaldehyde, 37 mg, is 18.5 times the USA EPA limit for daily formaldehyde in drinking water, 2.0 mg in 2 L average daily drinking water,

185 times the New Jersey limit,
615 times the California and Maine limits,
1,850 times the Maryland limit.

The 1999 July EPA 468-page formaldehyde profile admits that four states substantially exceed the federal EPA limit:

Environmental Protection Agency 2.00 mg in 2 L daily drinking water

California and Maine------------ 0.06 mg
Maryland---------------------- 0.02 mg
New Jersey-------------------- 0.20 mg

This site explains that the harmful rat dose of 500 mg/kg body weight per day was divided by 10 for "interspecies extrapolation" (the higher vulnerability of humans than rats), by 10 for "range of sensitivity" (the variation of individual human vulnerability), and by 10 for "subchronic to chronic exposure" (the increased danger from lifetime as compared to the 3 month exposure in the rat test), giving a total reduction of 10x10x10 = 1000 for the UF = Uncertainty Factor.

The human Oral RfD is the rat Oral RfD divided by 1000, so 500 mg/kg/day is reduced to 0.5 mg/kg/day , so that the allowed dose for a 60 kg human is 30 mg oral methanol daily.

Moreover, a recent study found that after 4 months of moderate oral aspartame, rats took four times longer to finish a simple, one-turn maze-- an alarming level of neurotoxicity:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/aspartameNM/message/1088
Murray, full plain text & critique: chronic aspartame in rats affects memory, brain cholinergic receptors, and brain chemistry, Christian B, McConnaughey M et al, 2004 May: 2004.06.05 rmforall

"Control and treated rats were trained in a T-maze to a particular side and then periodically tested to see how well they retained the learned response.

Rats that had received aspartame (250 mg/kg/day) in the drinking water for 3 or 4 months showed a significant increase in time to reach the reward in the T-maze, suggesting a possible effect on memory due to the artificial sweetener."

The 11% methanol component of aspartame is immediately released in the GI tract, so these rats were being exposed to only 27.5 mg/kg/day methanol.

The EPA IRIS on 1998.05.05 used a 1986 90 day rat study to find a No-Observed-Effect Level (NOEL) value of 500 mg/kg/day, which, divided by 1000, became their human long-term safe methanol level of 0.5 mg per kg body weight per day, which for a 60 kg average person is 30 mg methanol daily, for oral exposure.

However, the rat level is 18 times greater than that for the level of dramatic memory loss and clear-cut brain changes found by McConnaughey M, May 2004.

This suggests reducing the human long-term safe level twenty times to .025 mg/kg/day = 25 micrograms per kg body weight per day, which for a 60 kg average person is 1.5 mg oral methanol per day.

Methanol from aspartame, wood and cigarette smoke, and many sources is made by ADH1 enzyme into formaldehyde within cells inside walls of human blood vessels, harming adjacent tissues, the WC Monte paradigm: Rich Murray 2012.06.16

See WC Monte's two 1-hour video lectures May 2012
http://www.WhileScienceSleeps.com

The 200 mg aspartame in a 12-oz can of aspartame drink is 11% by weight methanol, 22 mg, which is soon released from the GI tract into the blood, where quickly any tissues with high levels of the ADH1 enzyme within the cells of blood capillary walls and adjacent tissues, especially liver, kidney, brain, retina, etc., in humans only, turn the methanol into formaldehyde within these cells, which, being highly reactive, quickly binds with and disables DNA, RNA, and proteins inside the cells, causing cell death, attracting macrophages (white blood cells), which also die, creating durable, cumulative, evolving complex micro lesions.

This affects the fetus, as well, or not so well...

So, there are many resulting novel modern "diseases of civilization" in humans only, for each type of damaged tissue, including Alzheimer's, multiple sclerosis, lupus, arthritis, the birth defects spina bifida, autism, and Asperger's, many specific cancers, and chronic ailments of liver, kidney, heart, lung, joint, skin, muscle, etc.

The Monte methanol/formaldehyde toxicity paradigm MMFTP is backed by 740 references, given free online as full pdf texts by Prof. (retired 2004, Arizona State University, Nutrition and Food Sciences) Woodrow C. Monte, http://www.WhileScienceSleeps.com along with his 2012 January 240 page text "While Science Sleeps", with two free chapters on "Autism and Other Birth Defects", and "Multiple Sclerosis", and free full earlier articles and references on MMFTP.
