I'm writing to whoever is in charge of the new $2.7 billion study on children. I know the FDA and the National Institutes of Health are not baffled. Below this story is my letter to FDA condemning their lies to the public on aspartame, (NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, Canderel, E951, etc.) the deadly neurotoxic drug causing this poisoning of our kids. And I've spoken to doctors at NIH as well and told the reason they don't do an epidemiological study on aspartame is too much of the population is using the toxin. Indeed, 70% of the population and 40% of our kids are using a deadly neurotoxin that triggers ADD, ADHD, autism, obesity, chemical hypersensitization and escalating asthma, the problems mentioned in this article. And that's just the tip of the iceberg since there is a 1038 page medical text, Aspartame Disease: An Ignored Epidemic by H. J. I'm sure you're besieged by many callers with all kinds of reasons for the poisoning, and a lot may be very close to the target for these reasons. Should they say MSG you can understand why, like the aspartic acid in aspartame, it's an excitotoxin (product that stimulates the neurons of the brain to death causing brain damage). It has an additive and synergistic effect with aspartame. Many will tell you the vaccines can trigger autism. Of course, they can, but aspartame interacts with ALL vaccines and one I know has aspartame in it. Others may tell you that fluoride is a neurotoxin. Yes it is and aspartame interacts with fluoride as well. You get the point. As long as aspartame is on the market children have no chance whatsoever.
Let's go a little further. The 50% phenylalanine in aspartame as an isolate is neurotoxic, goes directly into the brain, lowers the seizure threshold and depletes serotonin. Lowered serotonin triggers SUICIDAL TENDENCIES, manic depression or bipolar, mood swings, anxiety, insomnia and panic attacks, for starters. And as it brings out in the medical text, aspartame INTERACTS with all ANTIDEPRESSANTS!!! There has been a lot of news recently about antidepressants causing suicidal tendencies. Understand the situation now? In the New York Times it told about the FDA covering up the issue. In my opinion this is why. In some cases of psychotic drugs there is a real double whammy like Haldol. That's what the lady was taking who killed her five kids, and drinking Diet Coke! Psychiatrist Ralph Walton, M.D., writes on aspartame triggering behavioral and psychiatric problems and has done a study himself on aspartame. A couple of his reports are on http://www.dorway.com.
We talked about the aspartate in aspartame and glutamate. Here is what neurosurgeon Russell Blaylock, M.D., says in Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills in the chapter on Internal Development of the Brain: "In has been proposed that exposure to excitotoxins (such as glutamate and aspartate) during fetal life may cause alterations in brain development that could later result in such serious brain disorders as AUTISM, LEARNING DISORDERS, HYPERACTIVE BEHAVIOR and possibly schizophrenia. We have seen that excess glutamate can trigger abnormal nervous system development by interfering with the establishment of proper nerve connections, that is, the wiring of the brain. I have stated earlier that the onset of these behavioral and learning disorders may not show up immediately but rather may be delayed for many years following birth because of the timing of the onset of specialized brain functions. Injury to the speech areas of the brain, for example, would not be evident in the newborn baby, but would be evident when the child began to learn to speak. Such injuries could result in delayed speech or stuttering. Likewise, damage to areas of the brain concerned with complex learning skills would not be evident until the child started school and was exposed to math and reading. Until that time, the child would be considered to be normal."
In talking about the aspartic acid in aspartame and MSG, both excitotoxins, consider the dishonesty of industry. Jack Samuels has the MSG site, http://www.truthinlabeling.org. He has a letter sent to Sue Ann Anderson, R.D., Ph.D., a senior staff scientist at the Life Sciences Research Office in Bethesda, Maryland, from the Chairman of the International Glutamate Technical Committee, Dr. Andrew G. Ebert, in which Dr. Ebert states aspartame (NutraSweet) has been used as a masking sweetener in both the MSG samples and the placebos in tests conducted on the safety of MSG.
Obviously, the glutamate industry knows there is no way to do studies showing the safety of MSG or that it doesn't react. So what they are saying is that MSG doesn't react anymore than the placebo without telling the world that the placebo is another excitotoxin. They have been doing this since l978 which is before aspartame was approved, showing you how long it has been known that aspartame is an excitotoxin because of aspartic acid.
As Dr. Blaylock brings out in his book, a placebo is used in such a test as a control so that the test subject cannot tell which sample they are taking: the active drug or the control substance. Placebos are supposed to be completely inert substances. Otherwise, they would produce a physiological effect all of their own and ruin the experiment. He points out that it has been clearly shown in a multitude of studies that aspartate produces the identical destructive reactions on the nervous system as MSG. It would seem obvious even to the layman that you would not use a control substance to compare to a known toxin if the control contained the same class of chemical toxin. But that is exactly what is being done.
"Did these scientists disclose in their scientific papers the fact that the placebos also contained a known excitotoxin? The answer is an emphatic "no" and I have reviewed dozens of these studies. In fact, I was not aware of this deception until I received the proof from Dr. Samuels. In many cases the powder used to mix the placebos was supplied by the International Glutamate Technical Committee (IGTC). It is interesting to note that the Ajinomoto company, the chief manufacturer of MSG and the raw materials of aspartame, is an active member of the IGTC.
"This company funds extensive research programs and provides funds to major universities for research on the safety of MSG. In my personal opinion, I have to believe that both the company representatives and certainly the scientists doing the research, must know that such studies are questionable at the very least." If you read my letter to the FDA on the coverup of aspartame you will see they wanted Searle indicted for fraud, the original manufacturer. The problem is you can't do studies on poisons and show them to be safe. It requires fixing the studies or not disclosing the problems as the FDA brought out in government documents on aspartame. The same thing you see is done with MSG. In this case found in FDA records, they knew all along about using aspartame as the placebo, finally admitted it was wrong, but did nothing about it. After all the FDA is the handmaiden of the pharmaceutical industry and wouldn't think to admonish them about committing fraud.
As to autism again with relation to the aspartate in aspartame and glutamate, Dr. Blaylock wrote an excellent paper titled The Central Role of Excitotoxicity in Autism Spectrum Disorders. One of the most famed neuroscientists in the world today, Dr. John Olney, founded the field of neuroscience called excitotoxicity. He did the studies on aspartic acid in l970 and found it caused lesions in the brains of mice. Along with Attorney James Turner in Washington, D.C. he did everything he could to prevent the approval of this deadly neurotoxin, aspartame. His report to the Board of Inquiry of the FDA was a prophecy of what would happen to the brains of our kids if they approved it. In his report he mentioned that youth was a very important factor to be considered. "A young infant or child does not have fully developed protective mechanisms and his body mass is only a fraction of the adult mass; yet, he may ingest considerable quantities of foods or beverages containing excitotoxins so that the mg/kg burden of excitotoxin may be much higher than for adults eating the same food. Also, of course, a child's limited defenses are very easily overwhelmed by diseases."
"Adding to the above the fact that multiple excitotoxins are finding their way into foods from various directions today and that these agents add to one another's toxic potential when ingested in combination, it is not unreasonable to insist that a 100 fold margin of safety be observed for the use of excitototoxins as food additives and that the total burden of excitotoxin in the food supply be taken into consideration in the margin of safety calculation."
Further, Dr. Olney said: "It warrants special emphasis that excitotoxins act by an acute but silent mechanism such that it requires ONLY A SINGLE EXPOSURE to toxic concentrations for circumventricular organs neurons to be quietly DESTROYED."
In a summary report he said glutamate, aspartate and several of their structural analogs (excitotoxic amino acids) have well established brain damaging and neuroendocrine disruptive effects when administered systemically to various animal species. When excitotoxins, including glutamate and aspartate, are administered in combination, they add to one anothers excitotoxic potential. Animals of any age are vulnerable, but young animals are vulnerable at lower doses than adults. Sub-toxic doses of these compounds stimulate (excite) hypothalamic neurons, thereby inducing acute perturbations in plasma hormone levels which, even in the absence of brain damage, might influence growth and development were such perturbations to occur repetitively during the formative years."
As I stated earlier the aspartame manufacturers are pros at fixing studies or doing whatever is necessary not to show the damage it will cause. For instance, in the protest of the National Soft Drink Association it discusses high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) and thin-layer chromtography (TLC). HPLC is a far superior analytical method relative to TLC and numerous HPLC methods exist for the detection and quantification of amino acids. Searle's choice of TLC over HPLC adversely affected the quality and type of analytical data generated on aspartame and its decomposition products in soft drinks. Understanding now how dangerous aspartic acid is, you know why Searle purposely used TLC - it cannot detect aspartic acid at all. When it comes down to it they are pro's in chromatography. In fact in the July 24, 2002 edition of the Chicago Sun Times was an article about Triangle Laboratories of Durham, N.C. The company had developed what they referred to as RapidScreen, a test based on high resolution gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, that provides rapid and reasonable analysis of products submitted by food producers. Joseph D. Morales, vice chairman of Triangle Laboratories commutes weekly from his Chicago home. In the article, Morales is quoted as saying: "At some point, the weight of the evidence is going to tip people to the side of true concern about the quality and safety levels of the food supply." Morales is former corporate controller of G. D. Searle, and former executive vice president and chief operating officer of NutraSweet Co. As Jack Samuels said: "I guess people change their stories depending on the source of the money that fills their pockets."
Aspartame breaks down to a witches brew of toxins including diketopiperazine, a brain tumor agent that triggered brain tumors in original studies. Even in these studies protested by NSDA, the standards for use of HPLC to detect aspartame and DKP were prepared in buffered aqueous solutions. A far better technique would have been to prepare the standards using beverages matrices. The use of beverage matrices would have reduced the danger of interfering compounds collating with the compound of interest.
Knowing how aspartame manufacturers have always operated, you can understand Dr. Olney's comments that Searle's safety evaluation of aspartame had been characterized by an avoidance of the tests required to determine whether aspartame, when ingested with glutamate had the potential of destroying neurons in CVO regions of brain or of adversely influencing neuroendocrine systems. When Dr. Olney wrote this in l980 he said Searle's safety evaluation up to l974 was conspicuous for its omission of tests designed to clarify the safety of aspartame (+Glu) for the immature human, despite their intention of adding aspartame to a children's food supply which is already heavily laden with added Glu.
Dr. Olney further mentioned that in August l974 he demonstrated and Searle subsequently confirmed oral administration of aspartame to infant mice results in the Glu-type lesion in CVO regions of the brain. Minimal loading doses required to destroy central neurons were in the rage of 1 g Asm/kg, i.e., about 0.5 g Asp/kg (which is the minimal oral dose of aspartate for destroying neurons when aspartate is given as aspartate).
Olney also said: "Approaching the brain damage issue in a traditional manner by calculating a margin of safety (comparing the lowest toxic dose in animals with the expected maximal acute exposure level for human children) reveals quite clearly that there is no margin of safety for the addition of aspartame to the massive amounts of glutamate already being incorporated into foods ingested by children."
Again, he shows the modus operandi of Searle when he says: "None of the recent Searle-sponsored experiments involving acute oral intake of Glu plus aspartame in humans included any effort to measure plasma hormone responses, although such measurements would have been easy to include since the protocol involved drawing blood samples at sequential intervals after Glu plus aspartame loading. This is regrettable, since such measurements would have provided direct evidence in humans pertaining to the acute neuroendocrine changes I postulate these agents may induce when ingested by humans. Once again, Searle appears to have OMITTED gathering the kind of data required to establish the safety "in use" of their product."
Concerning children: "I conclude that despite Searle's persistent tendency to AVOID PERFORMING EXPERIMENTS OF APPROPRIATE DESIGN to clarify the safety of the aspartate moiety of aspartame under "use" conditions, the few items of relevant evidence they have generated since l974 serve to reinforce my position that aspartame, together with glutamate, does pose significant risk of destroying neurons in children's' brains and exerting adverse influence on neuroendocrine systems. Certainly the studies performed, thus far, do not even begin to refute, disprove or rule out the brain damage and neuroendocrine risks I have defined and documented with extensive evidence, nor do they demonstrate that there is an adequate safety margin for the use of aspartame (plus Glu) in children's' foods. Searle has failed, therefore, to establish the safety of their product for use in children's' foods."
Those were Dr. Olney's final words to the Board of Inquiry of the FDA, and they agreed and revoked the petition for approval. But Don Rumsfeld was CEO of Searle at the time and didn't care whether aspartame was safe or not. As the 8 month investigation by UPI stated, and the congressional record, Rumsfeld said "he would call in his markers and get aspartame approved" anyway. He was on Reagan's transition team and the day after he took office appointed Dr. Arthur Hull Hayes to do the deadly deed. No FDA Commissioner for 16 years would allow aspartame on the market. Dr. Hayes over-ruled the Board of Inquiry and then went to work for the PR agency of the manufacturer and has refused to talk to the press ever since. At that point the FDA who once tried to have Searle indicted for fraud, became handmaiden to the pharmaceutical/chemical industry.
America sleeps in terror. Terrorized by a health care crisis of ever more staggering proportions. Our families are but a single sickness from financial destruction. Citizens who scrimped their life through to cushion their retirements now choose whether to eat or pay for drugs. Face it: if you're over 50 you're over-medicated in the USA today. Try saving 80% by buying out of Canada and FDA makes a law against you! Land of the Free no more!
It's about money. Money for Commissioner Hayes. Money for the federal prosecutors. Money for the parade of FDA officials who slithered into the NutraDeath Club. Billions of quarters tinkling into vending machines of the National Soft Drink Association that once announced aspartame instability, but when the cash registers began dancing to the beat of aspartame addiction just hurried to the bank. Under the venal authority of Commissioner Hayes FDA repudiated its defense of a nation's health to become the private harlot of the drug industry. Aspartame and a thousand more dread poisons pimped by FDA are loosed on a trusting population. Like seeping sewage the stinking greed of FDA and it's whoremasters has infected American healthcare, murdering children, impoverishing families and devouring widows' houses.
FDA allows a neurotoxic drug masquerading as an additive that liberates free methyl alcohol which converts to formaldehyde and formic acid and causes metabolic acidosis. Methanol is classified as a narcotic. Chronic methanol poisoning affects the dopamine system of the brain and causes addiction. So not only are our children medicated instead of educated but addicted as well.
The news is filled with stories of athletes sudden death, so defibrillators are becoming as common as fire extinguishers. Aspartame triggers an irregular heart rhythm and interacts with all cardiac medication. It damages the cardiac conduction system and causes sudden death. The last child to drop dead I know of was a little 6 year old playing in gym in Chicago. Now there are organizations, CRY for children who now have cardiac problems and SADD for those who drop dead. What does the FDA do who knows aspartame is the cause? They outlaw ephedra as a cover for aspartame, and the deaths continue. It was Dr. John Olney who reviewed the FDA's cases on ephedra and found that indeed ephedra is safe. The outlawing was illegal against the Dietary Supplement Bill, but it was a way to snatch another supplement for industry and at the same time attempt to cover up the fact that aspartame is causing an epidemic of sudden death. It's so epidemic that two Parliamentarians in Europe petitioned the World Health Organization to declare sudden death a syndrome so it can be tracked.
When Charles Fleming who drank diet pop all day and played basketball died of methanol poisoning his wife called the police not realizing the methanol was from the aspartame he was consuming. They had her take a lie detector test which she passed with flying colors. But they had her indicted anyway saying she poisoned him with methanol. This Sunday School teacher who tried to get her body building husband to stop using so many dangerous products was sentenced to 50 years and remains in a prison in Virginia, even though there was no evidence. Several physicians looking at the autopsy supplied notarized affidavits that Charles Fleming was poisoned by aspartame. The FDA knowing this has completely turned its back on the situation.
And the FDA knows the approval of aspartame has not only poisoned our children but poisoned the world as James Bowen, M.D. told them 19 years ago: "In my opinion, this has resulted in the mass poisoning of the American public as well as seventy-plus countries in the rest of the world. Watching FDA officials walk through the "revolving door" and be further rewarded by being promoted to other positions of high public responsibility is clear evidence of a government out of control."
Dr. Bowen wrote a paper, Aspartame Murders Infants regarding violation of the Federal Domestic Genocide Law. He said: "At every point in the fertility process aspartame destroys, beginning with the gleam in Mom and Pop's eyes it ruins female sexual response and induces male sexual dysfunction. Beyond this, aspartame disrupts fetal development by aborting it or inducing defects. And if a live child is born aspartame may have heinously damaged the DNA of the baby, cursing future generations."
"Beyond the danger of attack from the maternal immune system, aspartame directly damages the fetus. A good reference point is fetal alcohol syndrome: lifelong deformity, disability and loss of mental acuity in infants who survive maternal alcohol abuse. Even moderate use of beverage alcohol by the mother abuses the fetus and its future. Methyl alcohol is fifty times as potent an intoxicant as ethyl alcohol (beverage alcohol). Formaldehyde is 5000 times more potent. Assembled in the carefully crafted aspartame molecule these neurotoxins are about 20,000 times more potent than beverage alcohol."
He also said: "Because of aspartame's extreme toxicity even minute doses are destructive, damaging fetal nervous systems and related structures. Eyes and hearing come to mind. All tissues are similarly damaged as beyond its functional neurological intoxicating effects, methyl alcohol/formaldehyde is the strongest organic base in the living organism and is a polymerizing agent, turning tissue into plastic. From such poisoning there is no escape, it is obligatory metabolism by alcoholdehydrogenase of methyl alcohol into nascent formaldehyde, occurring 75% in the cytosol (cytoplasm) and 25% in the mitochrondria."
Aspartame destroys young minds! Educators often rely on Ritalin, Prozac and other psychoactive drugs to bring order to the classrooms. So education becomes medication. Do firemen fight smoke? Aspartame is the fire, attention deficit disorder (ADD) is the smoke from a raging atrocity consuming the brains and lives of our children!
Dr. Miguel Baret of the Dominican Republic removed cow's milk from 360 children's diets as it has a specific protein that can cause diabetes, especially in children. Instead they drank juice laced with aspartame and most of them developed "abnormal restlessness, lack of concentration, irritability and depression." When Dr. Baret removed it "The results were astonishing. Their symptoms disappeared in 4-6 days in ALL of them!" Dr. Baret proved what aspartame does to the brains of our kids.
In the September, l999 issue of Parents Magazine there was an article titled: "What's Wrong With Our Children?" It said that kids are taking psychiatric drugs in record numbers. Even back then it acknowledged that "At least 3 to 5 percent of American school-age children suffer from ADHD, for example, and 5 percent show signs of depression. By the end of high school, one in four teens will have seriously considered SUICIDE." .. "The problem is so widespread that it's getting hard to find anyone whose son, niece, godchild, or grandchild hasn't been affected. Some observers are calling it an epidemic and demanding that screening programs, just like the ones for tuberculosis and other diseases, be put into place."
The article even back then said at least 12 million American children have a mental disorder. It discussed that in research, scientists have linked low levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin to depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. And what is it that is depleting serotonin? Aspartame! Psychiatrist, Chairman of the Center for Behavioral Medicine said: "We have known for years that when aspartame is ingested with a carbohydrate rich meal the usual physiologic increase in tryptophan is blocked, while brain phenylalanine and tyrosine concentrations are increased. These changes in amino acid neurotransmitter precursors could, I believe, alter indoleamine/catecholamine balance, and thus have a profound effect on mood and cognition ... depressed mood, anxiety, dizziness, panic attacks, nausea, irritability, impairment of memory and concentration." Dr. Walton stated on 60 Minutes in l996 that all Monsanto/NutraSweet funded studies show aspartame is safe but almost 100% of independent studies show problems. In Dr. Walton's own study Monsanto refused to sell Dr. Walton aspartame because they couldn't control it. After one man suffered a retinal detachment, another started bleeding from the eyes, and others complained of being poisoned, the institution stopped the study.
In Wisconsin the ADD people took the worst school with learning disabilities and behavioral problems and had the pop and vending machines removed. For the duration of the project they fed the children nutritious food. There was no aspartame. When it was over, this school was the best in Wisconsin with zero learning and behavioral problems. It has become known as Miracle in Wisconsin.
Many schools are following suit. The article below discusses what is happening in Minnesota. It discusses in the past 15 years there has been an explosion in the number of Minnesota kids diagnosed with autism-related conditions, from about 100 children to nearly 3,000. And now its going to get worse because American Water Star is putting aspartame water in many schools there. See my letter to the attorney general of Minnesota on www.wnho.net (click on aspartame). They also have one drink with Splenda, another one of these poisons approved by the Fatal Drugs Allowed folks - a product the company tries to convince the public is natural and comes from sugar. What it really has is a chlorinated base like DDT and Dr. H. J. Roberts says can cause autoimmune disease. Already reactions are pouring in. The above web site has some of these reports. Likewise, the FDA approved Asculfame Potassium that caused leukemia and cancer in original studies. And aspartame interacts with other toxins. Four support groups for aspartame victims are on line and some even complain about now reacting to genetically engineered food. Erwin Chargaff, Father of modern molecular biology said: "The technology of genetic engineering poses a greater threat to the world than the advent of nuclear technology. Genetic engineering and biotechnology are a molecular Auschwitz." But this government will approve anything industry asks. Then industry has their Stefford Wives, the professional organizations who they fund, push their poisons and defend them. Monsanto gave the American Dietetics Association $100,000 to endorse the atrocity of RBGH, the bovine growth hormone which increases the insulin growth factor, the regulator of cancer.
And I haven't even got to fluoride but because of length I'll just quote one statement from Dr. Blaylock's book, Health & Nutrition Secrets To Save Your Life, on the subject: "In the case of diet drinks in aluminum cans, the very toxic brain aluminum fluoride compound co-exists with multiple toxins found in aspartame, thus creating the most powerful government-approved toxic soup imaginable. With the strong association between aluminum, excitotoxins, aluminum fluoride complexes and Alzheimer's disease, it would be completely irresponsible to encourage people to consume this toxic mixture. Yet, this is done literally billions of times every year in advertising."
And don't forget all the front groups on the Internet who will tell you aspartame is safe. And even Center for Science in the Public Interest wrote a newsletter that just came out and said there's no foundation to claims floating around the Internet that aspartame causes everything from Alzheimer's to multiple sclerosis. Yet, Michael Jacobson has gotten information for years and knows it does causes these without a shadow of a doubt. Aspartame destroys the central nervous system and mimics MS, and that's right on the front cover of the medical text, Aspartame Disease: An Ignored Epidemic. He knows better but we have to put up with their nonsense as well.
Dr. James Bowen is a victim himself with Lou Gehrigs and explained how the destruction works. Aspartic acid, the excitotoxic component of aspartame does not cross the blood brain barrier but is secreted into the cerebral spinal fluid by the choroid plexus located in the ventricles of the brain. There, in the brain's lower area and upper terminus of the spinal cord is where Lou Gehrigs, Parkinson's Disease and Multiple Sclerosis damage is most prominent. These critical locations bathed in the toxin as it removes from the blood. From the third to fourth ventricle there is a narrow canal called sylvian aqueduct which fills with this secretion and washes the roof of the hypothalamus. This accounts for the damage to the hypothalamus.
As to Alzheimers consider that memory loss is so prevalent with aspartame that it is #9 on the FDA list of 92 symptoms, and Dr. Roberts has already written Defense Against Alzheimers Disease and says aspartame is escalating it. It is also discussed in his medical text and in Dr. Blaylock's Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills. It's so a matter of record you wonder why people like Michael Jacobson of CSPI aren't ashamed to say the things they do. In fact, there is a new movie on aspartame called Sweet Misery: A Poisoned World. It was made by Cori Brackett, an aspartame victim who was diagnosed with MS at the Mayo Clinic. She had a very large lesion. But she decided to take responsibility for her health and got on http://www.dorway.com and got off aspartame.
